Course Description
This course introduces students to Shakespeare's works through close attention to six to eight plays across the genres of tragedy, comedy, and history, along with selections from Shakespeare's poetry. Additional course material covers Shakespeare's sources, English Renaissance culture, performance practices, and later adaptations, including film. The course emphasizes understanding Shakespeare's works in their historical moment and their continuing reinterpretation across various times, cultures, and media. Does not satisfy requirements for English major. Credit will not be given for both ENG 209 and any of ENG 485, 486, or 487.
